15 Mar Kickstarter success statistics per popular categories [Infographics]
This article features infographics with statistics for successful projects on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter sorted by the most popular categories – Gaming, Design, Technology, and Film and Video. One of the most important things you need to do when analyzing successful projects is to define success. The statistics showcased here include both raised funds and the success rate based on those raised funds.
Kickstarter current statistics (February 2018)
Video games are still in the top 4 launched projects on Kickstarter followed by Design, Technology, and Film and Video categories. If you ever wondered: Is Kickstarter for video games dead? – this answers your question. With over 36,000 video game projects launched, this category alone raised almost $700 million with a 35.80% success rate. The Design category with 30,000 projects raised approximately $660 million with a success rate of 35.25%. The Technology category, even though in the top 4, is still the least successful category of the four featured in the infographics with over 33,000 Kickstarter projects launched and just over $600 million raised. This shows that Tech projects that are extremely successful and have significantly surpassed their initial requested funding amount and projects that failed to gather larger amounts. Lastly, the Film and Video category has the highest success rate at 37.13% and the highest number of launched projects of around 65,000.
Successful projects and fundings
To reach conclusive data about the successfulness of a certain Kickstarter category, we must observe the funds raised per category. If we only look at the highest amounts, i.e. up to $100,000 and up to $1 million, we see the following:
- Video Games category – 8.03% of current launched projects raised up to $100,000 and 0.73% raised up to $1 million
- Design category – 11.08% of current launched projects raised up to $100,000 and 0.57% raised up to $1 million
- Technology category – 19.53% of current launched projects raised up to $100,000 and 1.43% raised up to $1 million
- Film and Video category – 1.52% of current launched projects raised up to $100,000 and 0.02% raised up to $1 million
According to the second infographic, Film and Video projects failed to gather significantly larger amounts compared to other categories. Considering the nature of this category, this is not surprising, as Film and Video don’t usually offer practical solutions in the consumerism driven world like Games, Design and Technology categories.
Does your project have what it needs to succeed?
The success of a Kickstarter project doesn’t depend solely on the category and the direction in which you want to develop your project.
